The Textile Futures Research Group (TFRG) and the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) present a LIVING TEXTILES SALON in two parts: International Conversations and Question Time.

Textile designers are uniquely placed to inhabit other design fields and cohabit with the world of science.  Working processes in science and material design practice, it would seem, are very compatible. In recent years the potential of nano and bio technology, relatively new science fields has caught the imagination of a new generation of textile makers.

Unimaginable materials are being developed to: grow into clothing; be sprayed from a can onto surface and body; to mimic responsive behaviours found in nature for all possible textile purposes. Even the body's own skin is being explored and redesigned as an interface for evolving, almost invisible, technology. Not only the skin of the body, but the skin of our buildings is being redefined in this conjunction of textiles and science. Design of tangible and tactile intelligent surfaces or skins is beginning to evolve in product form, for the body and in the built environment.

A series of presentations, talks and panels will take place over two days.  (Afternoon session 2.30 - 4.30 & Evening session 6.30-7.30).

Day 1: will explore ‘Living Textiles' in relation to the body, investigating Textile and Fashion Science.   

Day 2: will explore ‘Living Textiles' in the context of the Built Environment and our everyday relationship to this.

This exhibition focuses on the contemporary iconic pair of blue jeans that have been transformed to represent the individual designer's view of the return to uniqueness as an antidote to mass-market, globalization an homogenisation of so-called "fashion trends".

An exploration of the cultural, sartorial, social-political and aesthetic dimensions of denim. A journey from the past to the present, from rural England to the prairies of North America, from hard labour to high fashion, from the street to chic, from the movies to rock and roll and from
cowboys to couture.
